The Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO GX5 makes its case with the grip, not a promise that every electric shave feels like a blade. It is a palm-held rotary built for keeping a shaved head tidy. The buying decision is whether that shape suits your routine, what the exact kit includes and whether you are willing to keep the cutters clean.
Worth considering for regular head shaving. Jason Jones at Shaving Advisor likes its cupped grip and comfortable shave, but says it does not finish as close as a manual razor. His GX5 review does not recommend replacing a healthy older Gold PRO just for the update.
Skip it if your priority is a blade-smooth finish or a tool for cutting down longer hair. Compare the Pitbull Gold PRO GX5 as a maintenance shaver, not a substitute for every tool in a haircut.
The quick picks
What the grip changes
Jones explains that he slides his fingers through the body and cups the shaver to reach the back and sides of his head. That is more useful buying information than a broad claim that rotary always beats foil. He also notes that the body feels tall when held at the sides, so the benefit depends on how you hold it.
The GX5 uses four rotary cutters. Jones distinguishes the movement of those cutters from the head assembly: the cutters flex, but the whole head section does not pivot. Do not read a description of flexible blades as a promise of an independently swiveling neck.
The maker’s current kit page lists a Forte 4 Head PRO Blade, blue travel case, adapter and charging cord, port cover and a one-year warranty. Check the listing you intend to buy against that list. A product-family name alone does not establish the contents of every seller’s bundle.
The closeness is not manual razor close, and I do get left with some slight stubble areas on the sides and back of my head where the hairline recedes.
Jason Jones, Shaving Advisor GX5 review, updated October 19, 2025
What is actually new about the GX5?
Skull Shaver advertises a stronger motor and a refined handle. Jones says the motor sounds faster than the older model he compared, but he is careful about the result: a fresh shaver and fresh blades could also explain a slightly quicker shave. He could not see the advertised handle refinement himself.
The battery display and Forte cutters are not enough on their own to prove a generational leap. Jones says the GX5 uses the same Forte blade system as the original Gold PRO. His earlier Gold PRO review also discusses its battery-percentage display. A listing may highlight a useful feature without that feature being new.
Jones identifies the supplied hard travel case as a practical addition over his older Gold PRO package. That is a kit benefit, not evidence of a closer cut. If your existing shaver works, compare the specific problem you want to solve before buying a replacement.
The GX5 uses the same Forte blades as the original Gold Pro, which are a very effective four-blade system.
Closeness and comfort: keep the tradeoff clear
Jones reports a comfortable head shave in his own use, with some stubble left behind. He tried the GX5 with shaving cream too, but did not find much benefit for himself over dry use. Those are his results, not a guarantee for every scalp or a reason to promise irritation-free shaving.
His review favors using dedicated head shavers on short growth. The useful distinction is maintenance versus removing a grown-out haircut, not a universal number of days between shaves. Hair growth and the finish you accept differ. If you need a clipper stage first, our bald-head clipper guide covers that separate job.
Ovidiu Nicolae’s ShaverCheck review mostly covers the older Gold PRO, with an added GX5 note. His observations are useful background on the grip, cleaning and face-shaving limitations, but they should not be presented as a long-term GX5 endurance test.

Battery and charging: use the supplied adapter
Skull Shaver lists up to 90 minutes of cordless use for the Pitbull Gold PRO GX5. That is the maker’s runtime figure, not a measured promise from TrustedBarber. The percentage display helps show remaining charge; it does not tell you exactly how many complete shaves you personally have left.
USB charging does not mean any phone charger is suitable. The official charging guidance says to use only the supplied adapter and warns against outputs above 5 volts. Keep the supplied cable and adapter together rather than treating a compatible-looking connector as enough.
The product page permits wet or dry use and rinsing, while expressly saying not to submerge the shaver. Its GX5 page gives an IPX7 description; a general support page still uses IPX5 wording for the broader range. Follow the no-submersion instruction instead of turning a rating into permission to leave the unit underwater.
Only use the adapter provided with your shaver.
Cleaning and ownership: the work does not stop at shaving
Skull Shaver’s support page says to empty the blade after every shave. It also advises against storing the shaver in the shower or leaving it charging continuously. The detachable cutter assembly is a cleaning feature; it does not make the GX5 maintenance-free.
The same guidance recommends replacing blades every three to six months. Treat that as the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation, not a guaranteed cutter lifespan. Before buying, check the replacement head that fits the exact unit and how it is sold. A discounted blade subscription and a one-time purchase are different commitments.
The current warranty and return guidance separates a limited defect warranty from normal wear and consumable blades. It describes a 45-day U.S. money-back period subject to its return policy. Do not assume that a third-party seller has identical terms. Country-specific warranty guidance also limits service to the country of purchase, an important detail for an imported gift.
Keep the purchase record and the model details with the charger. The official U.S. warranty page says a defective unit must receive an RMA number and be returned to its U.S. address; a repaired or replacement unit is sent to a U.S. address only. That matters if you buy while traveling or arrange a cross-border gift. A warranty length is only one part of the service arrangement. Read the seller’s process and the country rules before comparing two offers as if they carry the same support.
What owners report: useful questions, not a failure rate
A January 2026 r/bald discussion contains a February comment from u/markbroncco explicitly naming the GX5. That commenter likes the grip and dry shave, but says the removable charging-port cover was easy to lose. This is one owner’s account, not a durability study.
An April 2025 Pitbull discussion mixes positive ownership reports with breakage complaints and does not consistently identify the GX5. It is background on the older family, not proof that the updated model shares or fixes every reported problem. The practical questions are about replacement parts, return handling and the exact model on the box.

Shaving Advisor’s GX5 video accompanies Jones’s written review discussed above. Cole Schwartz also has a model-named GX5 review. Baldcafe’s older Pitbull Gold video is included separately as product-family context, not a GX5 comparison. A useful demonstration does not establish another buyer’s shave time or skin response.

The Wahl Magic Clip is a clipper option to compare if your routine also involves cutting hair down. It is not another rotary shaver and does not replace the GX5 by matching its grip.
The Andis ProFoil is a foil-shaver option with a different shape and ownership routine. Compare it separately in our foil-shaver guide rather than assuming all electric shavers do the same job.
FAQ
Is the GX5 worth upgrading to? Jones advises keeping a working older Gold PRO. For a new buyer, compare the grip, included case, exact seller bundle and ongoing cutter cost.
Is it waterproof? The GX5 product page permits shower use and rinsing but says not to submerge it. Do not turn that into a claim that soaking is permitted.
Will it shave as close as a manual razor? Jones says it did not in his use. Consider that tradeoff before buying for a completely blade-smooth finish.
Can any USB charger power it? No. Follow the maker’s supplied-adapter instruction rather than choosing by the connector alone.
