A foil shaver and a rotary need different movements, and a washable personal shaver needs different care from a dry-only barber foil. Start with the mechanism, then match the cleaning routine to the exact model. Braun, Panasonic, Philips and Andis give the instructions below; the Philips S7000 demonstration shows the rotary routine in use.
Match the tool and cleaning supply to your exact setup. A dry-only professional foil and a washable personal shaver do not share a cleaning routine. Check compatibility before adding a station refill.
Foil vs rotary: know what you are holding
Electric shavers come in two mechanisms. A foil shaver hides oscillating blades behind a thin perforated metal screen; hair pokes through the holes and gets clipped. A rotary shaver packs round heads with spinning cutters under slotted discs. The mechanism matters because the working motion differs, and the manufacturers say so explicitly:
- Foil (Braun): Braun’s official Series guide says to move the shaver up and down repeatedly, not in circular motions, with light pressure, keeping all the foil elements in constant contact with your skin.
- Foil (Panasonic): Panasonic’s official instructions call for gentle pressure, skin stretched with your free hand, and a back-and-forth motion.
- Rotary (Philips): Philips’s official guidance says to move the shaver in tight circles so hairs growing in different directions are removed, and to minimize the number of times you go over the same area.
Straight strokes for foil, small circles for rotary. If you are not sure which mechanism you own, the type is named in your model’s manual.

The manufacturer routine
Braun’s step-by-step guide for a close electric shave starts with three prep points:
- Make sure the shaver is charged and ready.
- Shave before you wash your face; Braun notes the skin tends to be slightly swollen after washing.
- After a few days without shaving, trim the stubble down before you shave. Philips’s guide makes the same point: pre-trim if you have not shaved for a few days or have a dense beard, because long hair can pull.
If you are shopping, our electric shaver guide and shavers under $100 picks cover both mechanisms.
Panasonic: check the model before the mode
Panasonic’s operating guide separates its advice by model number. ES-8103 and ES-8243 owners can choose SOFT or LOCK for the pivot action, with the shaver on or off. That control changes how the head moves; it is a separate check from whether the blades are running. The page also describes FREE and LOCK head settings for the models in its later notes. Read the label beside your own control rather than assuming every Panasonic uses the same switch.
The same page warns against pressing on just one part of the outer foil, touching it with a finger or nail, or bringing it against a hard object. Keep the whole working surface in contact as the instructions describe. More pressure is not a shortcut to a closer shave: Panasonic explicitly says excessive pressure does not provide one.
For the ES-LV67, Panasonic lists several reasons the sensor sound may stay unchanged: beard thickness, the amount of clippings in the head, or the type and quantity of shaving gel. Those notes matter when comparing a new shaver with an older one. A sound that does not change is not, by itself, proof that the sensor has failed. The same operating guide is the place to check what the battery display and controls mean for that model.
Cleaning, by model type
Cleaning instructions are model-specific, and water is the dividing line. Do not generalize from one brand’s manual to another shaver:
- Braun foil shavers: Braun’s Series guide says to remove the shaver head and rinse it quickly under tap water after shaving, with Braun’s cleaning center as an optional extra.
- Philips rotary: Philips recommends cleaning after each shave and removing the shaving heads for a thorough monthly clean; hair and dirt stuck inside is its named cause of a shaver that starts pulling.
- Andis ProFoil (professional foil): the opposite rule. Andis’s official care instructions are dry-only and explicit: never run the shaver, foil assembly, or cutters under water. The routine is to unplug, remove the foil assembly, gently tap its base on a flat surface so the hairs inside fall out, and lightly brush hairs out of the cutters. Andis warns against removing the foils themselves, which can damage them.
“Do NOT run shaver, foil assembly or cutters under water.”

For Panasonic ES-LT3N, ES-LT7N, ES-LT5N and ES-LV67, holding the power switch for more than two seconds activates a sonic vibration cleaning mode. Panasonic says you cannot shave in this mode.
Panasonic also warns owners of the listed models not to rest a finger on the power switch during shaving: that can switch the shaver off or lock it. Use the thumb rest instead. For those models, sonic cleaning mode is not a shaving mode. Check which operating mode is active before treating an unexpected response as a cutting-power fault.
Wet or dry, per Philips
Philips’s wet and dry guidance starts with the same check its FAQ answer gives: only use water, foam, or gel if your exact model’s manual explicitly permits it. For dry shaving, its prep is specific: wash your face with water and a soap or cleanser first, then give your skin time to dry completely before you start. For wet shaving, its two working tips are to rinse excess foam or gel off the shaving heads as you go, so the blades stay clear, and to hold the heads firmly but gently against your skin so the shaver glides.
“Allow at least 15 minutes for your skin to dry completely before you start shaving.”

Replacement schedules
Cutting parts are wear parts. Braun’s close-shave guide gives a general recommendation to replace them every 18 months, and elsewhere on the same page puts the foil and cutter block at 12 to 18 months depending on your shaving behavior; your model’s manual carries the exact interval. Philips’s framing is performance-based rather than a fixed interval: a low battery or dirty shaving heads reduce performance, so if your shaver stops shaving as closely as it used to, its first suggestion is removing and thoroughly cleaning the heads. It also ties performance to a charged battery, recommending the shaver be charged and ready for each session. Andis’s ProFoil manual, cited in the cleaning section above, lists the foil assembly and cutters as replaceable parts. Its dry-only care instructions still apply when those parts are changed.
“We recommend you replace the cutting parts every 18 months as they are wear parts.”
Braun, close-shave guide
Two smaller notes from the same sources. On models that ship with one, Braun’s cleaning center cleans and lubricates the shaver automatically at the push of a button, which covers the lubrication step manual cleaning skips. And Panasonic notes a quirk rather than a fault: its shaving sensor may not respond depending on the type and quantity of shaving gel or foam used, which Panasonic says is normal, not a defect.
What long-time users add (anecdotes)
On rotary technique, one r/malegrooming member’s electric-razor tip list advises: “Shave in circles… Keep your hand steady on the razor and move it in small circles. It’s a little trick to help avoid those tiny patches that somehow creep past always.” The member’s own razor is a rotary; the same list describes detaching “those three metal circles”, so this is rotary advice, not a foil technique.

FAQ
Should I shave wet or dry? Follow your model’s manual. Philips says to use water, foam, or gel only if your exact model’s manual explicitly permits it. Braun’s dry-shave guide recommends shaving before washing your face.
Can I rinse my shaver under the tap? Only if your model’s manual says so. Braun’s Series guide says yes for those models; Andis’s ProFoil instructions prohibit water entirely; Philips tells owners to check the manual before wet use.
Why is my electric razor pulling hair? Philips’s first check is a dirty shaver; clean the heads. Beyond that, consult your model’s manual or the manufacturer’s support.
